May 2016 Healthy Eating Food Demo at PS69 with Jacqueline Gomes

This May, registered dietitian Jacqueline Gomes gave a hands-on demo to students at PS69Q about healthy eating and trying new foods that are nut- and gluten-free.

As part of our Healthy Schools Program, Ferreira Foodtown visits local inner NYC schools offering healthy food ideas and options that they are able to find and purchase from our stores and/or online. This year, Jacqueline taught two classrooms of first graders about the importance of healthy eating and how to substitute in new items. The kids got to make (and eat!) blooming apples made with cooked sliced apples, sunflower butter, cinnamon and sliced brown rice tortilla wraps (gluten-free, peanut-free).

The children had a wonderful time making their snacks, and when it came time to taste test, many were vocal about what they liked and didn’t like. We were happy to provide the children of PS69Q with the experience to try new things and the education of thinking outside their everyday snack items.

At the conclusion of the demo there was a raffle for Garden-In-A-Can herbs for 16 lucky winners to take home, and they were also given tote bags filled with healthy goodies – all of which are available for purchase next door at Ferreira Foodtown.
